When Does Alimony End in Iowa?

Under Iowa Code § 598.21C, spousal support obligations can conclude either automatically or through targeted judicial modification.

Automatic termination triggers: Unless explicitly stated otherwise in the divorce decree, all standard alimony forms terminate automatically without court intervention upon the death of either party or upon the recipient spouse's formal remarriage. The cohabitation rule: Unlike some states, where moving in with a new romantic partner automatically stops alimony, cohabitation in Iowa does not automatically terminate support. 

Instead, it merely grants the paying spouse the legal right to file a modification petition. The paying spouse must prove that the cohabitation has fundamentally reduced the recipient's economic need for support.
